A Meerkat is a mammal and part of the Mongoose family. They live in the Kalahari Dessert, Southern Africa, preyed on by Hawks & Eagles. Meerkats are very sociable animals, they live in groups and look out for predators to protect their family. They are protected against some venoms like snakes and can actually eat scorpions.
A female can have several litters per year and give birth to 1-8 pups, who grow fast. Meerkats have a Matriarchal society and usually have a dominating couple who will be the main breeders. When the Matriarch dies the females fight for hierarchy and the female that wins, usually the biggest, her testosterone naturally rises and will kick out any pregnant females, including any females that are close to her size.
If you have ever wondered about the dark rings around their eyes, this reduces the amount of light that is allowed in.
