I felt so lucky when a Vervet Monkey family presented itself on a patch of grass, by the sea in Mombasa. I had been to Nairobi, Tsavo and Mombasa to take photos of the wildlife there. This was an extra surprise as I was not expecting them here. I spent a long time taking photos of them, it was all too tempting to get closer but I knew I needed to be invisible for them to play, feel safe and natural.
I remember well that people just walked past them disinterested as if they was not there, that made me feel sad, we should be looking, learning and admiring them.

When I took this image they were very lively, the females were racing around, looking aggressive and territorial, this male was just sat taking everything in his stride and didn't seem to feel the need to get involved in the disputes at that moment.

I have practiced getting the 'nice' image I wanted, and got it, but now I have to change my perspective and perfect other shots. A male Gelada Monkey looks around a lot, seems to take the higher ground to keep an eye on his females. He chases and mates when ever he pleases.

Baboons are Old World Monkeys native to Ethiopia. There are six species of Baboon, the ones in the picture are Guinea Baboon. These Monkeys are known for their long molars and broad incisors. These Baboons eat a varied diet consisting of fruit, roots, seeds leaves, grass etc and insects and even small mammals. Unfortunately part of the reason they have become endangered is eating human crops.
Baboons work on a social structure which has multi levels of Males, females, juveniles and sub adult males. They are very vocal and are able to communicate using this vocalisation.

The Baboons have been quiet every time I have visited the Park lately, this time I stayed a substantial amount of time watching and waiting, sometimes patience really pays off. These monkeys are active chasing each other around and appearing to argue.

This bright eyed and bushy tailed fellow was the only kind of it's particular species, in with the ring tailed Lemurs. He was sat on his own enjoying his food whilst the other Lemurs were playing happy in the trees, but always checking around and watching.
